This guide allows you to folding (gpu and/or smp) on a headless system without a monitor. Some prior installation and setup is assumed and info for that can be found in this Setup forum. You will be able to login to the system and control it as if you were using a monitor or kvm. Any system with a vnc client (realvnc, vinagre, etc) will be able to log in. This guide also shows a secure way to monitor the folding clients from a remote system with minimal setup and no samba configuration necessary.

Setup for Folding System

1. System should be running Ubuntu 8.04 for this guide
2. System IP address for example is 192.168.1.108
3. User for example is aaron
4. Password for user in example is folding
5. Folding started using user aaron

6. Folding directory is /home/aaron/folding
7. Make sure openssh server is installed - apt-get install openssh-server
8. Setup Remote Desktop - Go to System then Preferences then Remote Desktop
9. In the section Sharing, check the box for "Allow other users to view your desktop"
10. In the section Sharing, check the box for "Allow other users to control your desktop"

11. In the section Security, uncheck the box for "Ask you for confirmation"
12. You should now be able to make this system headless and start folding :) This system can be logged into using ssh and vnc now
13. To setup an additional system, repeat all steps except that you need to change the IP address on the additional system

Setup for Monitoring System

1. System should be running Ubuntu 8.04 for this guide
2. Install fahmon - how to
3. Install vinagre (vnc client) and sshfs - apt-get install vinagre sshfs
4. Make directory for remote folding system directory - mkdir /home/aaron/remote1
5. Mount directory on remote system - sshfs aaron@192.168.1.108:/home/aaron/folding /home/aaron/remote1
Note: will ask for password = folding

6. To login to this system using vnc and remotely control - vinagre 192.168.1.108
Note: if you set a password for Remote Desktop on the folding system, you will have to enter that now. This is *not* the user password.
7. Start fahmon. Setup is normal. To monitor remote client, just use folder /home/aaron/remote1
8. To monitor an additional system, repeat steps 4 and 5 using a different directory such as /home/aaron/remote2

Ask any questions :)
